Michael's Quotations

Philosophy

Quotations from famous and not so famous people often summarize their message and impact on our lives. Here are a few that have affected me.

Quotations

The medium is the massage." Marshall McLuhan
When people replace 'massage' with 'message', it really rubs me the wrong way. Where were they in the 60's?

"It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission." Grace Hopper

"TACT: The ability to tell a man to 'go to hell' and have him feel happy to be on his way." unknown

"What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant curiosity of a child and the feeble mentality of the average adult." Sigmond Freud

"Managers worry that people who get specialized training may leave. They should be worried that people who don't get specialized training may stay!!" unknown

"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana." Groucho Marx -- see Twice a classic for an Internet tale.

"A slave is one who waits for someone else to come and free him." Ezra Pound

"If I had more time I would have written less." Mark Twain

    be

    bull
    Bernard Gunther

"On the fourth day of telecommuting, I realized that clothes are totally unnecessary." Dilbert
...give me more naked truths .

Twice a classic:

An Internet tale...

"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana."

While I'm sure Groucho got as much mileage out of this witty saying as he could, the Internet has made it even more popular. As part of a lesson on searching the Internet, students are asked to 'find the author'. This 'quotes' page is one of my most frequently visited pages, thanks is part to Groucho's original quotation and Ernest Ackermann & Karen Hartman who challenge their students to find the author.
