These pictures of humpback whales were taken during my trip to Maui in January 2011. The Hawaiian islands, particularly off the west coast of Maui, serve as the wintering grounds for humpback whales. The whales migrate each year from the waters off Alaska, to the warmer waters of Hawaii to give birth to their young and to mate. The wintering season is from approximately the middle of December until the end of March.
Also be sure to check out the companion web page for a compilation for the rest of our Vacationing in Maui pictures.
